Does your Stroud business show up when people search on their phone?

If you run a small business in Stroud or nearby, a lot of your next customers will find you the same way: they open their phone, type what they need, and tap the first place that looks right. That might be Google Search, Maps, or a “near me” result while they are already out.

You do not need a huge marketing budget for this. You do need a website and a local listing that behave well on a phone. Below are a few practical checks you can do yourself this week.

Start with a real phone, not a desktop window

Open your site on your own phone (or a colleague’s). Do not resize a laptop browser and call it done – phones zoom, scroll and tap differently.

Ask yourself:

  • Can you read the text without pinching to zoom?
  • Is the phone number tappable so someone can call you in one go?
  • Is the contact form usable with thumbs, or are the fields fiddly?
  • Does anything important sit under a sticky bar or behind a popup?

If you struggle, a customer will struggle too. Fix the awkward bits first. Fancy visuals can wait.

Make the next step obvious

People rarely browse for fun when they need a plumber, a café table or a quote. They want to know you exist, that you cover their area, and how to get in touch.

On your homepage and main service pages, keep one clear action near the top: call, email, or a short enquiry form. Spell out the area you cover in plain English – Stroud, Stonehouse, Nailsworth, or further afield – so visitors are not left guessing.

Avoid packing the page with every service you have ever offered. A short list of what you actually want more of usually works better than a long menu of everything.

Check how you look in Google on a phone

Search for your business name on your phone, and also for a simple phrase a customer would use, such as “web design Stroud” or “cafe near Stroud High Street” – swap in your own trade.

Look at:

  • Whether your Google Business Profile appears, with the right address, hours and phone number
  • Whether the link goes to the page you want (homepage or a specific service page)
  • Whether old addresses, closed hours or a wrong number are still showing

If the listing is wrong, edit it. Accurate hours and a working phone number matter more than a polished description.

Speed and trust on mobile

A slow page on mobile data will lose people before they read a word. You do not need a perfect score; you do need the page to feel usable within a couple of seconds.

Practical habits that help:

  • Compress large photos before you upload them
  • Avoid stacking several video embeds above the fold
  • Keep plugins and popups to what you actually use

Also check the little trust signals: a real address or town name, a contact method that works, and pages that look finished rather than half-built. Local customers notice.

A short monthly habit

Once a month, spend fifteen minutes on your phone:

  1. Open your homepage and one key service page
  2. Try the phone number and the contact form
  3. Search your business name and one “near me” style phrase
  4. Note anything broken, out of date or hard to use

Write the notes down. Fix one thing before the next month. That rhythm beats a big redesign you never start.

When it is worth asking for help

If your site is an old builder template that breaks on phones, or you cannot edit it without breaking something else, it may be cheaper to rebuild cleanly than to keep patching. That is the sort of conversation we have with local businesses at bwired – no hard sell, just an honest look at what you have and what would help.

For now, the phone checks above cost nothing and often surface the highest-impact fixes. Do those first, then decide whether the site itself needs more work.
